Algonquin Park's Interpretive Trails During Winter Algonquin Park's interpretive trails remain open during winter, but have now switched to 'winter mode' which has important implications for visitors. Trail guide booklets (containing trail maps) have been removed from trailhead sign boards. If you are walking an interpretive trail, purchase trail guides in-person at the Visitor Centre (open daily), at a gate, or order them in advance online at http://store.algonquinpark....on.ca Interpretive trails are not maintained by Ontario Parks during the winter months. This means visitors may encounter fallen trees, icy trail conditions, and other hazards along the trail. Following the blue circular trail markers indicates the correct direction on recently snow covered interpretive trails. Sunset times are earlier in the winter, and interpretive trails have no street lights, so ensure you allow enough time to be back to your vehicle prior to dark. Wear and pack the appropriate clothing, footwear, and equipment for the conditions. This should include additional clothing, water, snacks, a trail map, and a flashlight or headlamp. Short interpretive trails are often hard packed during the winter months from previous visitors, but snowshoes may be necessary depending upon the conditions. Ice cleats may also be a wise choice depending upon trail conditions. See Algonquin Park's current snow depth at https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca//algonquin-park-weather.ph As winter's snow deepens, some interpretive trail parking lots are not plowed by Ontario Parks. Watch https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca//winter-in-algonquin-park. for an updated list of plowed parking lots. Cell phone coverage may be unavailable or limited on the trail of your choice. Let a friend or family member know where you are going and when you expect to return. Cell phone coverage exists at the beginning of most interpretive trails. Watch for specific trail closures and advisories at https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca//algonquin_park_advisories Walking Algonquin Park's interpretive trails during winter is an enjoyable experience for those who are prepared. The Friends of Algonquin Park Directors Award 2020: Gaye Clemson Congratulations to Gaye Clemson who was recently awarded The Friends of Algonquin Park 2020 Directors Award in recognition of her significant contribution to the appreciation of Algonquin Park. Gaye Clemson has written nine books about the people and history of the Park, making her the most prolific author of books about Algonquin Park’s human history. To accomplish publication of her numerous books and maps ...about Park history, Gaye Clemson has combed through archival documents, travelled many kilometres, and has been curious enough to ask interview questions of others who spent time in Algonquin Park. Gaye Clemson has made extensive use of the Algonquin Provincial Park Archives and Collections in researching some of her books, bringing extremely valuable information about historical records and oral history interviews to the attention and awareness of Park users and others. Although natural history and human history have been the main components of Algonquin’s park interpretation program for 75 years, the appreciation of cultural history has often received less emphasis than natural history. Gaye Clemson has made a major contribution to the increased awareness of Algonquin Park’s human history through her research and writing, and richly deserves the Directors Award in recognition of this. On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Friends of Algonquin Park, it is a pleasure to present the 2020 Directors Award to Gaye Clemson.
